The senior director of Risk Management is responsible for overseeing and managing UAB Medicine’s comprehensive, system-wide clinical risk management program and claims within the professional liability insurance program. This position proactively identifies, assesses, and addresses clinical risks and trends to maintain the integrity of UAB Medicine’s care delivery and organizational reputation. The senior director leads a team that works collaboratively with leaders, attorneys, clinicians, providers, and other employees and staff across the clinical enterprise. Through this collaborative effort, this position will develop action plans or system improvements that will enhance an organizational culture that supports patient safety, mitigates risks of safety events, and supports the provision of safe, high-quality patient care. The senior director of Risk Management reports to the Chief Risk Officer and is responsible for 6-8 direct reports. The ideal candidate has more than 10 years of leadership experience in health care risk management or consulting.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
Plan, implement, and oversee the system-wide clinical risk management program for UAB Medicine and other entities covered by the professional liability insurance program, including:
provide support, education, and training to staff to build clinical risk awareness within the organization
clinical risk management data reporting, aggregation, analysis, and appropriate information sharing
analyze operational/clinical areas/trends and make recommendations to mitigate clinical risk
provide oversight, support and response to escalation of on-call events for clinical risk management services
identify and ensure pathways to support clinicians, providers and other clinical staff as second victims in reported incidents and claims
ensure appropriate escalation, investigation and intervention with allegations of sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect or other intentional patient harm occurring in the healthcare setting
Lead clinical risk management team in regards to professional liability and patient general liability claims services and processes to support the professional liability program, including:
managing the process of opening and closing of clinical risk management professional liability and patient general liability case files
conducting thorough clinical risk management investigations and drafting reports, case analyses, presentation materials and other information related to them
working collaboratively with the UAS/UAB Office of Counsel on professional liability litigation cases and settlements, including the discovery process related to such cases and settlements
drafting of certain clinical risk management reports related to clinical risk files/claims and responding to appropriate internal and/or external requests and/or queries
responsible for the preparation, management and disposition of clinical risk management claims pursuant to the professional liability program
making recommendations for reserves of claims to the Claims Committee and Policy Committee, preparing information and cases analyses for the Claims Committee and Policy Committee and supporting Claims and Policy Committee meeting(s) and clinical risk management meetings
authorizing patient billing adjustments, refunds and write offs for UAB Medicine
Work with leadership on contract review related to the clinical risk management program
Ensure clinical risk management team participation and involvement in appropriate UAB Medicine committees and meetings
Performs other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities
Approximately six (6) to eight (8) direct reports
Minimum Requirements
Graduate degree in business, insurance, risk management, law, health administration or public administration and ten (10) or more years of health care experience in progressively responsible roles. Significant experience as a risk manager or risk management consultant, with experience in health care risk management preferred. Experience in health care is required. Work experience may not substitute for education requirement.
ARM, CPCU, FASHRM, DFASHRM, or CPHQ or CPHRM designation preferred
