Provides leadership in Clinical Risk Management and Risk Prevention functions for the system including the reporting of sentinel events, serious reportable events, and risk management/prevention initiatives for process improvement and requirement monitoring requirements to improve patient care, minimize risk and improve patient/visitor safety. Directs the monitoring and reporting aspects of patient/visitor incident management to include but not limited to potentially compensable events, sentinel events, serious reportable events, root cause analysis and process improvements. Provides leadership for the First Person Property Liability Program to ensure monitoring, auditing, reporting, and mitigation of system-wide risk.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Promotes risk prevention, patient/visitor safety and quality of care by identifying risks associated with care delivery, processes and programs for the health system by directing, planning, organizing and leading staff and activities of the comprehensive clinical risk management program for the system in developing strategies for reducing these risks. - Develops and monitors strategic operational goals and plans for clinical risk management/prevention. - Leads the analysis of the divisions and facilities? clinical risk management indicators, root cause analysis, improvement opportunities, and prioritization. Identifies opportunities for improvement, new programs and initiatives to enhance clinical risk management and risk prevention. Supervises the statistical trending of losses and analyses patterns in coordination with facility staff. - Works with leadership and staff across the system to better understand the correlation between different risks, monitor and measure the performance implications of implementing risk mitigation and/or financing strategies. - Collaborates with Litigation and Risk Finance teams to identify, monitor and report on trends, clinical issues and gaps. - Directs reporting for operational performance, justification and/or corrective action. Develops and institutes data collection, management and analysis to measure key performance metrics. - Provides reports to leadership on enterprise risk management, summary dashboards, clinical data analyses, trends and significant events as requested. - Serves as the principle system risk management resource for providing education, training and sharing of best practices for patient/visitor incident management, sentinel events and root cause analysis. - Oversees the execution of sentinel events? reporting and analysis required by regulatory entities within the specified timeframes including all aspects of reporting to leadership bodies. - Collaborates with the Quality, Patient Safety and Legal Departments, as needed. - Provides consultation, guidance and resolution to executive team of the facilities during regulatory, patient safety, and risk crises. - Coordinates review and response to internal and external agencies regarding clinical risk management issues. - Collaborates with Facility CNOs and other key clinical leaders to develop clinical best demonstrated practice for risk prevention and establish patient care standards across the system. - Works with Clinical Leadership to develop and implement education/development focused on quality and patient safety, quality metrics, data utilization, continuous improvement, best practices, reporting requirements, compliance management and risk prevention. - Interfaces with senior leaders in Nursing, Operations, Support Departments, Quality, Care Coordination and Patient Safety to leverage corporate programs, tools and methodologies, align resources and drive participation in teams, initiatives, programs and processes to reduce risks. - Maintains current knowledge of clinical risk, patient safety and quality regulatory concerns and activities. - Oversight with FDA recall and Safe Medical Device Act process as it relates to specific clinical case of risk in patient care settings. - Selects, develops, manages and evaluates direct reports. - Serves on committees and councils as requested by the System Risk Officer. - Monitors, reports and manages all aspects and processes pertaining to First Person Property Liability Claims. - Coordinates review and response to internal and external agencies regarding First Person Property Liability issues. - Collaborates with the Support Services, Plant Services, Environmental Safety, and Employee Safety to address facility-based risks, as needed. - Selects, develops, manages and evaluates direct reports. - Serves on committees and councils as requested by the System Risk Officer
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: - Leadership and team-building experience required. - Must possess strong leadership and hospital/physician skills and be an effective team builder. - An understanding of matrixed and system reporting relationships - Proven experience in translating strategy into results - Collaborative leadership abilities and experience involving transformation change. - Ability to build departments and programs including staff selection and development. - Success working with medical staff leadership and committees. - Excellent interpersonal and listening skills; open, honest and objective manner - Can interact effectively with front line staff, physicians, senior leaders, physician leadership and managers/supervisors. - Ability to manage multiple complex projects. - Knowledge of State and Federal healthcare regulations. - Dedication to excellence and innovation regarding LEAN, quality and clinical integration.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: - 10+ years of clinical risk management experience required - Certification in Healthcare Risk Management required - Clinical Licensure strongly preferred (i.e. Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant)
