SUNY Upstate Medical University (SUNY Upstate) has partnered with AMN Leadership Solutions on a search for a new Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO). The CHRO is a key member of the leadership team at SUNY Upstate and is a strategic and transformational leader responsible for providing oversight for all aspects of the Human Resources function for the organization, including compensation and benefits, recruitment, employee and labor relations, professional development and learning, and employee and student health. The CHRO will have responsibility for the delivery of high-quality, customer focused, and progressive human resources services across SUNY Upstate.
SUNY Upstate is one of four academic medical centers of the State University of New York. SUNY Upstate has an annual budget of more than $1.8 billion. More than 10,000 people work at SUNY Upstate, which is the largest employer in Central New York. Each year SUNY Upstate educates nearly 1,600 students in more than 30 highly specialized upper-division and graduate programs (including the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Graduate Studies and Health Professions) and provides graduate medical education to approximately 600 residents and fellows. As a clinical system, SUNY Upstate sees patients at its two hospital campuses and through an extensive network of outpatient sites. There are 19 clinical departments, five basic science departments and two academic departments. SUNY Upstate conducts over $35 million in annual funded research dedicated to improving human health.
Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse is part of SUNY Upstate Medical University, the only academic medical center in Central New York. Academic medical centers are built around medical schools and research missions. As a medical enterprise, SUNY Upstate serves 1.8 million people, covering one-third of the state’s land mass. Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse is the hub of SUNY Upstate’s clinical activities. Half of the more than 10,000 SUNY Upstate employees are connected to patient care.
SUNY Upstate Medical University has recently been acknowledged for its role in partnering with Quadrant Biosciences to develop Clarifi COVID-19 test, the world's number one ranked saliva test according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The test ranked worldwide has been instrumental in keeping students, faculty, and staff safe on SUNY campuses across the state of New York.
In January 2021, it was announced that Upstate University Hospital achieved Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)—the highest and the most prestigious distinction a healthcare organization can receive for nursing excellence and patient care. With less than 10 percent of U.S. hospitals designated to earn the Magnet designation, the honor represents the Gold Standard for a nursing practice and excellence.
The CHRO provides leadership within the Human Resources function and supports all areas of SUNY Upstate by developing and rewarding employees and developing and implementing Human Resources systems that attract, retain, develop, motivate and reward a productive and engaged workforce.
The CHRO reports to the Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration of SUNY Upstate and to the Chief Executive Officer for Upstate University Hospital. The CHRO serves as the senior institutional officer responsible for human resource policy formulation and for overall planning, organization, direction and evaluation of human resource activities at SUNY Upstate.
SUNY Upstate is located in Central New York, in the city of Syracuse, the fifth most populous city in the state. Syracuse, with a population of 145,170, is the county seat of Onondaga County, which, together with surrounding communities, has a metropolitan area population of 662,577. Syracuse is the economic and educational hub of Central New York, a region with over 1 million inhabitants.
Syracuse is within a 4.5-hour drive of New York City, Philadelphia, Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal, and less than a day’s drive to Washington, DC, Baltimore, Boston, Cleveland, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Maine.
The region boasts many cultural activities, sporting events, and recreational attractions. The overall quality of life in the Syracuse area is exceptional. The cost of living in the area is low and housing is affordable. Commuting from suburban residential communities is easily managed. Downtown living provides easy access to many excellent restaurants and cultural attractions. The presence of many premier, nationally known colleges and universities across Upstate New York contributes to the vitality of the region. Public schools, in a community that is culturally and ethnically diverse are rated as excellent, and there are exceptional private and parochial schools. Two of the suburban Syracuse high schools are among the highest academically ranked in the country. Forbes magazine rated Syracuse fourth in the top 10 places to raise a family.
