PRIMARY FUNCTION/GENERAL PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Director is responsible for twenty-four hour accountability, integration, facilitation, and coordination of the leadership, management, and clinical activities of the NICU. Services as a professional role mode, leader, mentor, and clinical resource/educator for nurses and other members of the health care team. Develops departmental goals and objectives with other staff based on analysis of targeted outcomes measures of clinical and managerial processes. Improves operational excellence for patients related to cost, quality, service, and patient outcomes. Is responsible for development and implementation of plans that will support the overall strategic quality plan for service lines involving the NICU. Represents the NICU and is a liaison to internal and external customers, including physicians. Participates in professional development activities and is active on hospital-wide and physician committees. Demonstrates various styles of leadership.
Must be a graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing or appropriate clinical specialty. A baccalaureate degree is required – Masters degree is preferred.
Speciality certification preferred.
AHA/AAP Neonatal Resuscitation certification required; instructor status within one year.
Must possess current license as a Registered Nurse from the Commonwealth of Virginia or awaiting reciprocity.
Must have three to five years of recent clinical experience in Neonatal Nursing in a Level III or referral center.
Possesses the ability to perform a wide range of patient care techniques related to the care of high risk, unstable neonates with multi-organ system problems utilizing specialized care technology. Work requires knowledge of organization and operation of a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Possesses knowledge generally acquired through three to five years of experience in a leadership position. Must have previous work experience in a management position that required knowledge of financial management, staff development, supervision and evaluation; continuous quality improvement and associated regulatory requirements.
