Oversees Enterprise Risk Management process and risk finance, and claims function for the entire system. Leads wholly-owned Captive insurance company, including risk management grants program, alternative risk financing, and self-insured claims. Provides oversight for insured claims, including communication to management about trends and mitigation. Oversees risk finance portfolio for system, including commercial insurance, bonds, and self-insured workers’ compensation. Works closely with Captive manager, actuaries, brokers, and other vendors. Must stay connected with legal and clinical risk departments.
Enterprise Risk Management: Develops and implements an enterprise risk management process across the system. Responsible for enterprise-level risk identification, assessment, monitoring, and reporting efforts. Develops Enterprise Risk Management tools, practices, and policies to analyze and report enterprise risks, and to manage risks according to an enterprise risk management framework. Work closely with business partners and senior leadership to analyze, quantify, and communicate strategic risks throughout the organization. Serves as liaison to Enterprise Risk Committee of the Board, including preparing reports and presenting updates to the Committee. Partners with senior leadership to integrate enterprise risk analytics into business operations and strategic planning throughout the system.
Captive Leadership: Serves as the chief staff liaison to ProMedica Indemnity Company, the System's wholly-owned captive insurance company and in concert with the CLO, ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements. Coordinates all aspects of annual risk briefing and Vermont board meeting. Evaluates and implements appropriate risk financing mechanisms, underwriting programs and guidelines to insure the appropriate exposure base. Evaluates and develops strategic alternatives and programs for cost savings, efficiency, and risk retention to meet the diverse insurance requirements of the System and all its affiliated entities. Directs activities of actuaries and Captive manager. Oversees risk management grants program.
Insurance Management: Directly supervises the activities of the System's insurance broker and the placement of all insurance and reinsurance. Communicates, provides leadership, educates, and renders advice and counsel to senior executives, physicians and employees of the System on issues related to insurance and risk financing. Prepares specifications for competitive bidding, negotiates with brokers, agents or companies for insurance coverage, premiums, and services. Continuously evaluates portfolio for coverage gaps and mitigation strategies. Develops and implements insurance service plans, systems and controls that protect corporate assets and help the System establish and achieve financial objectives
Claims Oversight: Provides oversight of all insured claims, including those insured by the Captive. Continually monitors loss runs and other data for trends and reports to senior leadership and assist in creating mitigation plans. Assist in implementing early intervention strategies throughout system.
Liaison & Representative: Serves as ProMedica’s representative to underwriting markets to share vision and strategy for risk management, includes domestic and international travel. Acts as representative to boards to report on insurance, risk management activities, and other issues as identified.
Other Responsibilities: set strategic vision for risk management for system, manage department, attend meetings and run councils as needed and directed by Chief Legal Officer.
Must be highly organized and able to work in fast-paced environment, action-oriented and able to operate in ambiguous environments with minimal direction around new areas of work; must work independently and be detailed-oriented, with strong accuracy and completeness, diligence and discipline. Strong presentation skills, comfort presenting in large groups of executives.
At least 5 years’ experience in related field, including experience with ERM, Captive, and claims management; must include involvement with and knowledge of integrated health care system.
Masters or Law degree
10+ years’ experience in relevant field
Certified Risk Manager (CRM) or Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM)
Leadership experience, experience with compliance, audit, or legal helpful, demonstrated experience building teams and relationships with stakeholders; ability to motivate and inspire others, merge many ideas into a cohesive plan.
