GENERAL SUMMARY: Director, responsible for insurance placement of HFHS Office of Risk Finance and Insurance Services and Onika Insurance Company, Ltd. Responsibilities include the design and maintenance of a System-wide integrated insurance and risk finance program, including direction and management of risk finance, commercial insurance procurement, underwriting broker relations, and risk education of HFHS, its subsidiaries, and employed and non-employed physician insureds. Responsible for providing direction and advice to address risk management, risk finance and insurance issues for HFHS medical, professional, and administrative leadership and staff. PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: - Directs design and placement of hospital and professional liability insurance programs. Responsible for the design, placement, consolidation, cost effectiveness and management of all lines of coverage for System risk exposures, including: directors and officers, workers’ compensation, business interruption, property, environmental, automobile liability, blanket crime, and fiduciary liability. Coordinates and manages the consolidation and restructuring of insurance programs to facilitate and support System acquisitions, expansion, restructuring and business initiatives.
- Provides key role in responding to risk management issues for the administrative and medical staff including: crisis response, patient-physician related policies.
- Performs System-wide general pre- and post-loss risk management functions.
- Presents underwriting submissions to and directly negotiates pricing, terms and conditions with domestic, offshore and overseas insurance and reinsurance brokers and underwriters for the continuation of established and implementation of newly designed risk finance programs.
- Surveys, collects, identifies, and analyzes System-wide exposure and underwriting information from subsidiaries, business units, partnerships and physician insureds to establish a comprehensive, cost effective, efficient and dynamic risk finance strategy; designs and prepares insurance applications and submissions to establish risk finance and insurance programs. Recommends financing alternatives.
- Administers and manages various risk finance vehicles, including both primary and excess, including: trust funds, captive programs, commercial insurance and reinsurance.
- Maintains relations with commercial excess and reinsurance claims representatives to facilitate appropriate levels of notice and communication regarding individual and aggregate claims development to ensure cooperation, agreement, and reimbursement, where indicated, for covered claims.
- Designs, establishes and maintains a comprehensive claims and risk management information system for hospital, professional and general liability, workers’ compensation, and risk and insurance management programs. Prepares and analyzes statistical, financial, factual, and status reports for use in external and internal audit and actuarial reviews, System board and committee reports, and captive, commercial, and self-insured underwriting process. Maintains archives of historical accounting, cost allocation, funding, insurance and risk finance data.
- Develops product lines, establishes coverage, and manages non-employed physician professional liability insurance program. Participates as both a member of and staff to the HFHS Underwriting and Eligibility Committee.
- Provides informational and marketing services for HFHS insurance services throughout the System with non-employed, affiliated physicians and performs on-shore activities on behalf of the program.
- Administers, manages, and supervises program personnel and System liaison personnel. Prioritizes tasks, directs and monitors accuracy and completion, supervises staff activities and formulates budgets.
- Represents HFHS in its participation in insurance-related activities, and participates in various professionally related organizations (i.e., RIMS, CPCU, MSHA, MSHRM, ASHRM, etc.).
CONTACT WITH OTHERS: This position requires ongoing contact daily with all levels of HFHS administration and professional leadership and staff; affiliated non-employed physicians; actuaries; auditors; domestic and international underwriters, claims representatives and brokers; regulators; and other third parties. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: - Bachelor’s Degree
- Ten to Fifteen (10-15) years of experience in either a brokerage firm, hospital risk management program with direct responsibility of multi-line insurance purchase, or insurance company with health system underwriting risk experience
- Prefer ARM and CPCU certification but not mandatory
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: This position reports directly to the Vice President of Risk Finance Insurance Services. WORKING CONDITIONS: Normal office environment with minimal exposure to noise, dust, or extreme temperatures. |
