The Risk Management Coordinator is responsible for promoting safe patient care, mitigating malpractice and general liability exposure, and promoting regulatory compliance for the hospital. This occurs in a variety of ways including medical record review, staff interviews, application of regulatory standards, hospital policies, and risk management assessment. The Risk Management
Coordinator works with staff to implement process improvements and reports to the Chief Medical Officer.

Duties of the Risk Management Coordinator may include but are not limited to the following:
Reviews occurrence reports. Reports serious occurrences/findings to Risk Manager/designee.
Investigates potential and actual SBUH medical & general liability claims. Conducts medical record reviews, interviews staff, and reviews related documentation such as policies and procedures.
Provides guidance to hospital and medical staff to promote patient safety/quality improvement and to reduce liability and maintain regulatory compliance.
Works with SUNY Counsel and the Attorney General's Office regarding cases in litigation against the hospital. Obtains information requested in the course of litigation discovery and to facilitate legal disposition.
Confers with Counsel's Office for legal advice on hospital related matters, including but not limited to medical malpractice issues, health care laws, administrative matters, state and federal regulations.
Identifies, investigates, and prepares reports for Department of Health reportable incidents and events.
Investigates potential and actual SBUH medical malpractice cases.
Identifies, investigates, facilitates root cause analyses and prepares reports for Department of Health reportable incidents.
Staff Education and Committee presentation responsibilities.
On call responsibilities from home.
Required: Registered Nurse with a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and 5 years broad hospital clinical/supervisory experience. Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office software. Excellent writing, analytical/critical thinking, and communication skills.
Preferred: Hospital Risk Management experience.
