FUNCTION: Responsible for the Company’s risk management activities and programs, with a focus on incident/claims management. Administers sound risk management principles and strategies to decrease the risk of harm and injury to residents (within assigned areas). This includes analyzing incident, reporting, claims and other risk management data; providing advice and support to Company staff; developing and conducting training and educational programs; assisting with claims management; and other risk mitigation activities.
Evaluates, develops and manages system wide risk management programs, including: Counseling community leadership and staff regarding resident related incidents and occurrences in Five Star communities;
Collaborating with divisional, regional and local leadership teams to develop and implement appropriate responses to incidents, emergencies, claims and other potential losses; monitoring and reviewing incident reports to identify immediate response needs at the corporate and local/regional level; ensuring required reporting to third party claims administrator (TPA) as appropriate; suggesting interventions and improvements; developing trending and analysis reports for corporate and regional leadership staff;
Actively reviewing incidents in electronic reporting system to ensure accuracy of data, and continuous functioning of the system; developing and distributing trending reports to appropriate parties; ensuring documentation of appropriate follow up actions, as needed; assisting with and overseeing internal investigations and participating in root cause analyses;
Collaborating with executive and regional/local leaders to ensure that risk mitigation plans and strategies are implemented and are effective.
Acts as a resource to corporate, divisional, regional, and community staff regarding risk management issues and concerns, including incidents, resident care issues, family disputes, requests for medical records and other areas, as needed.
Assists in the evaluation of professional and general liability claims; provides support and guidance to insured defendants throughout the litigation process; coordinates, directs and monitors litigation activities with national and local counsel and third party administrator.
Reviews and analyzes claims and risk management data to identify trends and recommend corrective action. Develops, designs and implements risk management policies, procedures, initiatives and tools, and monitors results to evaluate effectiveness.
Develops and implements risk management training and education programs to promote organizational awareness of the principles of risk management and to reduce claims-generating behavior and practices.
Able to travel (approximately 20%).
On call responsibility during evenings/weekends to respond to adverse events and emergencies.

At least three (3) years prior risk management experience, preferably in a senior living or healthcare setting.
Excellent time management, critical thinking, conflict management and verbal/written communication skills. Excellent computer skills and data analysis skills. Self-motivated and able to work in a high pressure, fast paced environment with minimal supervision.
Able to interact and partner with community-level staff, executive (C-Suite) and management personnel and key external advisers.
Able to prioritize risk management initiatives and interventions.
Some travel required.
Bachelor’s Degree in nursing or other clinical discipline preferred.
